Wei Yi, Sindarov, Esipenko in last 4 @ Goa
GMs Wei Yi , Andrey Esipenko, Javokhir Sindarov entered the last four after winning their tie-breaks in the 6th round (quarter-finals) at $ 2 million FIDE World Cup at Hotel Resort Rio, Goa. Home favorite GM Erigaisi Arjun went down to GM Wei Yi in a closely fought tie-breaker that saw the Chinese Grandmaster eliminating the Indian with a 2.5-1.5 match score. Completing the semifinal line-up along with GM Wei Yi were GMs Nodirbek Yakubboev, Javokhir Sindarov and Andrey Esipenko respectively.
With Erigaisi’s exit, the Indian challenge in the FIDE World Cup Goa comes to an end, but on the brighter side FIDE Circuit leader Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu is very much on track for the Candidates spot scheduled for next March at Cyprus.

GM Erigaisi Arjun was left to regret the missed chance a day earlier in the second classical game. It was a situation similar to the game of tennis where a match point missed can become a chance squandered to make history. Sporting aficionados may remember Roger Federer missing a pair of match points at the Wimbledon 2019 finals against Novak Djokovic. The Wei Yi – Erigaisi first rapid tie-break game ended in a draw and the next one turned out to be a decider. The stage was set for the all important Erigaisi – Wei Yi matchup where the Indian had the white pieces. The Chinese went for the solid Petroff opening not expecting anything more than a draw. A mid game unforced error did the Indian in who went on to lose after 79 moves.
The Peruvian Mexican Grandmaster José Martínez Alcántara who went 23 games without defeat finally met his match in the Uzbek GM Javokhir Sindarov. GM Martínez came up with a once in a lifetime show emerging from nowhere to move up to the quarter-final. His supreme self confidence and strength of play in trying circumstances will be remembered for long.
In another hard fought match GM Sam Shankland lost to GM Andrey Esipenko collapsing in the second set of rapids. The 2025 American Continental Chess Champion came back from defeat in the first set of rapid tie-breaks, but crashed in the next two rapid games losing the match 2-4. A heart-break for the Grandmaster trio – Erigaisi Arjun, Sam Shankland & José Martínez Alcántara – who went out in the rapid & blitz eliminations.
The last four players left have everything to fight for viz., prize money and a spot in the Candidates for the top three. The winner will receive the newly christened Viswanathan Anand Cup along with a Champion’s check of $ 120,000. The Runner-up shall receive $ 85,000 while the third and fourth placed players take home $ 60,000 & $ 50,000 respectively.
Semi-final Pairings (Round 7 Game 1): Nodirbek Yakubboev vs Javokhir Sindarov, Wei Yi vs Andrey Esipenko
Quarter-final Results (Round 6 Tie-breaks): Javokhir Sindarov beat José Martínez Alcántara 3.5-2.5, Wei Yi beat Erigaisi Arjun 2.5-1.5, Sam Shankland lost to Andrey Esipenko 2-4.
