“60 Minutes” features Chessboxing
Posted on November 20, 2025 BY Michael Ludwig
American news show “60 Minutes” ran a feature on chessboxing this week, focusing their story on the recent Chessboxing World Championships. Naturally, it took a US angle, but the “big bad Russians” narrative is one very familiar to chess.
Host Bill Whitaker spoke at length with proponent, fighter, and commentator Mat Thomas, and accompanied the American team to the World Championships. FM James Canty III is the most recognizable figure, who won the Super Heavyweight division in an upset.
You can view the full 12-minute feature here, or read the transcript here, and a summary article here, all on the CBS News website.
