The Dawn of a Chess Empire
India will rule the future
With an impressive performance, India has just claimed the gold at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest. In an amazing tour de force they won both the open section and the women section. The victory is not only a testament to the country’s extraordinary rising talent mass but also a significant marker in India’s journey to becoming the dominant force in the chess world for years to come. This was historic.
The Chess Olympiad, known as the most prestigious team tournament in the world, witnessed a very one sided battle for the title this year. The United States, Uzbekistan and China where just not able to compete with India. And when you look at the talent pool in India it is very unlikely they will be able to do so in the future.
The Golden Generation
India’s victory is attributed largely to the exceptional performance of its young guns, like Gukesh and Erigaisi whom have established themselves as future superstars of the game. They just kept on winning and Erigaisi – who is never invited to top tournaments for some reason – is now number 3 in the world and World championship contender (and the favorite against Ding) Gukesh is number 5.
Gukesh, who led the charge on the first board, delivered an outstanding performance and as he is only 18 years old it seems reasonable, he will overtake the top spot from Magnus Carlsen in the foreseeable future.

A Long-Term Vision
India used to be ‘just’ the one man army, Vishy Anand. And he is undoubtedly a big factor in the Indian chess boom. But the talent mass is so big and just after players like Gukesh, Erigaisi and Praggnanandhaa we have talents like Nihal Sarin, Luke Mendonca, Pranav, Sadwhani and many others below 20 years old. They are set to dominate the chess world, and we better get used to it.
India’s rise to the top of the chess world has been in the making for years. The country has invested heavily in nurturing young talent, with chess academies and programs springing up across the nation. Online chess has exploded in popularity in India, giving young players access to training resources and opportunities to test their skills against the best in the world from an early age.
Moreover, the emergence of Indian chess influencers, coaches, and platforms like ChessBase India has further fueled the game’s popularity. The country’s chess culture has become a thriving ecosystem, constantly producing new talents and building a robust competitive structure.
The Road Ahead: Chess Supremacy
With this Olympiad victory, India’s status as a chess superpower is no longer in question.
As the country celebrates this historic victory, the message is clear: India is no longer just a chess-playing nation; it is now the undisputed leader, ready to challenge the world’s best and reign supreme for years to come.
Chess is coming home, and India stands at its center.
