Sindarov turns 20, beats Magnus in a chess game
World Cup champion Javokhir Sindarov had a great 20th birthday: in the latest ‘Freestyle’ chess event, the Grand Slam Tour Finals in Cape Town, South Africa, Sindarov began with a win over Magnus Carlsen in round one and continued to win the round robin with 5.5/7.
Magnus, playing Black, got into a completely lost position early, and resigned after Sindarov’s 31. Rd5-d3 to get on with his day. All eight players are included in the quarterfinals, beginning at 1:00 p.m. UTC on Tuesday, with the round robin being used to determine the knockout matchups.

Top seeds were allowed to choose their opponents, which resulted in the following pairings:
1. Sindarov – Maghsoodloo
2. Aronian – Niemann
3. Erigaisi – Keymer
4. Carlsen – Caruana
