Magnus Carlsen Becomes the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Champion
Magnus Carlsen has clinched the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour — and he did it with days to spare. By advancing to the semifinals at the Cape Town (Grootbos) Finals, Carlsen secured an insurmountable lead in the standings, guaranteeing both the tour championship and a US$100,000 bonus prize.

That achievement came after a dramatic turnaround against Fabiano Caruana in the Quarterfinals. After losing the first classical game, Carlsen — playing Black in game two — managed to equalise. He then dominated both blitz tiebreak games under 5+2 time control, closing out the match and assuring himself of a top-four finish.

In the semifinals, Carlsen met Javokhir Sindarov—the rising Uzbek star who gave Magnus a run for his money. Sindarov, who beat Magnus in the round-robin stage, managed to beat him once again in the 2-game match, forcing a Blitz tiebreak. However, Carlsen, with momentum on his side, advanced after a hard-fought match. Sindarov’s resilience and sharp play make him a dangerous opponent, but Carlsen’s genius is formidable.
With the Grand Slam secured before the Finals are complete, Carlsen underscores once again why many regard him as the greatest all-around chess player in the world. With this win, Magnus has set up an all-exciting Final match against Levon Aronian!
