Danya no more, seeds steady @ Rhodes
GMs Pentala Harikrishna & Max Warmerdam went down to lower rated players, even as the Planet Earth mourned the untimely passing away of US Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky at just 29 years of age. Seeded teams continue to rule steady with few upsets sprinkled in-between after the second round in the European Chess Club Cup 2025, Rhodes. 21 teams led with full 4 match points after the second round in the Open section, while five teams kept themselves on top on the distaff side.
With World No. 4 Erigaisi Arjun on the first board second seed Alkaloid swept to a 6-0 win, while other top seeds viz., BayeganPendik, Novy Bor and SuperChess posted a similar 5-1 victories. Defending champions Novy Bor made light of Harikrishna’s defeat scoring on the other five boards.

The life of a genial & popular Grandmaster, an author and chess contributor getting snatched away at 29 will be a hard pill to digest. Danya, as GM Daniel Naroditsky is fondly called, will live in the hearts that he leaves behind. Aptly wrote WGM Jennifer Shahade, “Rest in peace to Daniel Naroditsky (November 9, 1995 – October 19, 2025), a Grandmaster who proved that kindness and greatness go hand in hand. May we all be a little more like you every day.”
