Gukesh, Giri win, Yu Yangyi upset @ Rhodes
World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju (SuperChess) was off to a winning start after the third round in the European Chess Club Cup 2025, Rhodes. GM Yu Yangyi (Alkaloid) went down to IM Schmidek Emil (Schachfreunde Berlin 1903) in the biggest upset of the round. Victories from GMs Erigaisi Arjun, Wei Yi and Aravindh Chithambaram pulled former champions Alkaloid through to a 4-2 win. FIDE Grand Swiss Champion Anish Giri turning out for top seeds Bayegan Pendik chess sports club defeated Australian GM Bobby Cheng helping his team sweep SV Werder Bremen 6-0.
World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju playing for Team SuperChess started with a win over veteran Armenian Grandmaster Sergei Movsesian (Sigil Fund Pardubice). It turned out to be a match of generations, for Movsesian had become a Grandmaster in 1997 long before the youngest world champion in history was born.

Going for the King’s Indian Attack Keres Variation, Gukesh went for the initiative from the start. Fluent middle game play saw the Indian give up exchange for activity. Finding himself in all knots Movsesian gave up his material, but the ensuing two bishops versus rook ending was not too difficult to convert for the world champion. Gukesh landed his win on the 63rd turn and moved on to World No. 10 in LIVE ratings.
IM Schmidek Emil (Schachfreunde Berlin 1903) carved out a fine win over GM Yu Yangyi‘s (Alkaoid) Advanced Caro-Kann. Surviving the opening onslaught by the Chinese Grandmaster Emil steered the ship clear largely through his highly active queen. When Yu preferred to repeat, the German chose to continue & his courage was rewarded. With precise endgame play Emil got the better of the higher rated Grandmaster after 53 moves.
Nine teams shared the lead with six match points in the Open section, while the women’s section saw teams Cercle d’échecs de Monte-Carlo & Sirmium Sremska Mitrovica on top of the leader-board. The fourth round starts today by 3 PM local time.
