FIDE Allows Jeans for Grand Swiss 2025
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has unveiled a revised dress code for the FIDE Grand Swiss and Women’s Grand Swiss 2025, set to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from September 3–16. The updated policy embraces a modern and inclusive approach while upholding the sport’s professional elegance, allowing players greater comfort and style options.
As stated in FIDE’s release on August 29, for the first time, “appropriate jeans” in dark blue, black, or grey are permitted, provided they are non-distressed and maintain a polished appearance.
Men’s attire includes suits, dark business casual trousers (including jeans), unicoloured shirts, dress shoes, loafers, or unicoloured sneakers. Women may wear skirt suits, pantsuits, dresses, dark trousers (including jeans), blouses, and similar footwear options. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich emphasized the balance between tradition and progress, stating, “We’ve introduced flexibility in the dress code while maintaining official standards. Elegant jeans are now allowed, ensuring chess remains professional yet appealing to players, audiences, and sponsors.” This change follows player feedback and the recent Jeansgate, where Magnus Carlsen infamously had to face the repercussions of violating the dress code by wearing a pair of jeans at the World Rapid & Blitz Championships in New York City. The Grand Swiss remains a key qualifier for the 2026 Candidates Tournaments, promising a competitive and stylish showcase.
