It was through the Chennai Grandmasters 2023 that the current world champion, Gukesh Dommaraju, qualified for the Candidates 2024 and ultimately captured the world title. Last year, GM Aravindh Chithambaram won the event and subsequently surpassed the 2700 rating milestone establishing this tournament as a benchmark that consistently elevates emerging super talents, at critical moments in their careers.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, GM Vladimir Fedoseev (2731) has withdrawn from 2025 Quantbox Chennai Grandmasters and the top seed of the Challengers section GM Karthikeyan Murali (2658) will now be his replacement. As GM Karthikeyan Murali is now part of the Masters section, his spot in the Challengers section goes to IM Harshavardhan G B (2454) who finished third in the @chesscom online qualifiers tournament last month.
With valuable FIDE Circuit points at stake, GMs Anish Giri & Nihal Sarin will be aiming for top finishes at this event. The first round starts by Wednesday 6th August at 5:30 AM ET / 11:30 AM CEST / 3 PM IST.
