Giri: “When you have a very busy day, classical chess is also just much easier to follow.”

Which do you prefer to watch, rapid/blitz or classical? Anish Giri, on Twitter, makes the point that it is easier to watch classical in those times where you aren’t putting all of your attention on it. Chess journalist and photographer David Llada expanded in reply:
“This is a very valid point that’s often overlooked. Rapid events are actually harder to follow: so much happens, and you need to stay focused on the action. Classical? You can tune in from time to time and still get a sense of what’s going on.”
Of course, if you are focused on it, rapid and blitz can be a fantastic spectacle, and in any time control a tournament like a World Championship is great fun.
