Tiebreaks for the Championship, Tan takes Third Place @ Women’s Chess World Cup
The 2025 Women’s Chess World Cup comes down to a single day of fast tiebreak games. Humpy Koneru and Divya Deshmukh drew both classical games of the Final, so they will play increasingly fast two-game matches to determine the champion.
The second game carried low intrigue, with as flat an evaluation graph as you will see.
Both players seem to be content with settling the tournament in Monday’s tiebreaks.
The third place match concluded in the second classical game. Tan Zhongyi was victorious over Lei Tingjie, winning with Black.
Tan’s last move was the artistic 55. …Rb3-b4!, prompting resignation from the White player. Black would win the queenside pawns, because while 56. Nxb4 axb4 57. a5 b3 58. a6 b2 59. a7 b1=Q 60. a8=Q is simultaneous promotion, it is Black to move: 60. …Qg6#!.
