Nepomniachtchi Clarifies India World Cup Remarks in 94-Minute YouTube Video
Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi, eliminated in the second round of the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Goa by Indian IM Diptayan Ghosh, has released a 94-minute video on YouTube analyzing his recent games and addressing the controversy sparked by his post-event Telegram comments. The original statement—“One of those places that you won’t be sad to leave”—drew backlash from Indian fans for appearing to disparage the host country.
In the video (roughly translated from Russian), Nepomniachtchi elaborates on logistical challenges without retracting his sentiment. He cites prior experience from a 2019 Kolkata event (Tata Steel Chess India Rapid & Blitz), noting armed security, poor ventilation in rest areas, and limited food options. In Goa, he describes a “five-star” hotel with unreliable air conditioning, power outages in an alternative villa, extreme humidity (30°C in November), jet lag, and a diet largely restricted to rice, flatbreads, and occasional omelets. He acknowledges that players more familiar with Indian conditions likely held an advantage.
Nepomniachtchi insists the venue’s conference hall justified its selection, though accessing restrooms required crossing outdoor heat into over-cooled interiors. He references similar complaints from peers, including GM Maxim Chigaev’s footage of construction views.
The video shifts focus to chess analysis but underscores how subpar rest and nutrition impaired performance across multiple events. After featuring in three back-to-back Candidates (winning two of them), Ian’s World Classical World Championship title dreams will have to wait more, as the Russian faltered in Goa.
