Lichess “Resumes Co-operation” with Saint Louis Chess Club
Lichess has shared that it has “resumed cooperation with Saint Louis Chess Club after positive changes, but will maintain its boycott on the US Chess Federation.” This refers to their decision not to carry tournaments held at the STLCC or by the USCF in the wake of sexual assault allegations made public close to two years ago.
Lichess took a stance against the described lack of accountability demonstrated by both organizations. Now, following direct engagement with the STLCC, they “are satisfied that the club has implemented significant changes that represent substantial positive steps towards creating a safer environment,” concluding “Lichess is lifting its previous restrictions regarding STLCC. We appreciate the club’s demonstrated commitment to addressing these important issues.”
On the USCF, however, they write: “Where STLCC provided Lichess with much transparency, the same cannot be said for US Chess.” They detail their remaining concerns, including the state of WGM Jennifer Shahade vs. US Chess. The final segment emphasizes the obligation that organizers have to the wellbeing of players and other participants.
