Posted on December 28, 2025 BY Michael Ludwig
The 2025 Winter Marathon is set to begin shortly on Lichess, at midnight UTC. It will run for 24 hours, during which anyone can play as many 5+3 blitz games as they can fit. Lichess gifts top finishers with a ‘unique trophy’ to display on their profile.
As of 30 minutes before the start time, there are about 3500 players set to play. While most of the world’s top players are busy with another tournament (the World Rapid & Blitz Championships), there are currently two GMs and a cluster of other titled players ready for action.
