India to Host FIDE World Cup 2025
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced India as the hosting nation of the prestigious FIDE World Cup 2025, scheduled from October 30 to November 27. This marks India’s first time hosting the event since 2002, when Viswanathan Anand won in Hyderabad. Even though the hosting state/city isn’t official yet, some of the rumoured bids include Goa, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu.

The tournament, featuring 206 players in a knockout format, will offer three qualification spots for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, determining the challenger for the World Chess Championship. FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky highlighted India’s deep chess passion, anticipating significant local interest. FIDE has released the list of qualified players, which includes the likes of world no. 1, Magnus Carlsen, and the World Chess Champion, Gukesh Dommaraju, among many other top players and local heroes. This event underscores India’s growing stature in global chess, following its historic 2022 Chess Olympiad and recent successes by young players.
