Honoring a Fallen Star: The 15th Karen Asrian Memorial Blends Speed and Legacy
In the chess-rich landscapes of Armenia, the 15th edition of the Karen Asrian Memorial tournament unfolds from November 27-30, 2025, as a poignant tribute to one of the nation’s brightest talents. Grandmaster Karen Asrian (1980–2008), a three-time Armenian champion and key member of the gold-medal-winning 2006 Chess Olympiad team in Turin, tragically passed away at just 28 from a suspected heart attack while driving in Yerevan. Renowned for his solid positional style and endgame mastery, Asrian’s untimely death shocked the global chess community, inspiring this enduring memorial.
Breaking from tradition, this year’s event ditches the open Swiss format for an elite 10-player round-robin showdown in rapid and blitz. Competitors face off in one rapid game per pairing, followed by a double round-robin blitz section with two games each—demanding precision under the clock in a high-stakes fusion of strategy and speed.

Top-seeded is India’s rising sensation, GM Nihal Sarin, freshly minted as the nation’s latest 2700-rated player and a blitz maestro known for his aggressive tactics. Joining him are fellow international powerhouses: Iran’s GM Parham Maghsoodloo, Romania’s GM Bogdan-Daniel Deac, and Uzbekistan’s GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov. Rounding out the field are five of Armenia’s elite GMs, including stalwarts like Hair Martirosyan and Gabriel Sargissian, ensuring fierce national pride on home soil.

The tournament will also act as a precursor for the players to warm up, before the highly anticipated and prestigious FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Doha, Qatar. Expect tactical fireworks as these speed demons sharpen their edges, all while celebrating Asrian’s unfulfilled promise.
