Gukesh vs. Ding, Game 4 Opening: Offbeat but sound
Posted on November 29, 2024 BY Michael Ludwig
The fourth game of the 2024 Chess World Championship starts with 1. Nf3, the move that follows 1. e4 and 1. d4 in popularity. Ding Liren (White) pushed it into very offbeat territory with 2. e3, rather than a setup with g3-Bg2 or pushing his c- or d-pawn to fight for the centre, while Gukesh (Black) chose 1. …d5 and aimed for a simple reverse London setup with …Bf5. Ding’s 6. O-O temporarily left So-Giri (2021), rejoining after his 8th move. It is the closest game on the clocks, as while Black used a little bit more time early, White is catching up thinking about his 9th move.
The first 8 moves of game 4 are given below. Follow the game live on Lichess, or on stream with commentary by Grandmasters Judit Polgar and Robert Hess.
