Gukesh vs. Ding, Game 2 Opening: Quiet Waters

The second game of the 2024 Chess World Championship has begun with an Italian Opening. Neither of Ding (White) or Gukesh (Black) played anything especially unusual, though the game reached fresh territory after nine moves. Ding’s 9. a5 deviated from a pair of 2023 games that included Gukesh’s compatriot Praggnanandhaa. White may have slightly better chances of pushing a quiet advantage, though with several early trades, we should not expect a repeat of game 1’s spice.
