Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Weissenhaus Tournament: A Whirlwind of Surprises
The highly anticipated Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour kicked off its first leg in Weissenhaus, Germany, with a bang. On February 7, Day 1 of the tournament witnessed a series of thrilling encounters, unexpected upsets, and displays of brilliant chess.
EARLY LEADERS
Grandmasters Fabiano Caruana and Javokhir Sindarov emerged as the early leaders of the tournament, both securing an impressive 4.5 points out of 5 games. Both the players earned their spot at the top by beating the World Blitz Champion, Magnus Carlsen in their encounters. Magnus Carlsen struggled to find his footing on the first day.
ROCKY START FOR MAGNUS AND HIKARU
Hikaru Nakamura and Magnus Carlsen were undoubtedly the biggest surprises of the day. In unusual fashion, Magnus lost 3 out of the 5 games on day 1, including his match-ups against both the leaders – Caruana and Sindarov. The Norwegian seemed out of character and the following blunder with black on move 8 testifies the same:

A sharp Fedoseev pounced on the opportunity to place Nb2! forcing Magnus to give up his queen for two pieces, eventually handing him his 2nd loss of the day (3rd overall). Despite securing two wins, Carlsen’s overall score of 2 points out of 5 placed him in a precarious position. One of those wins came against the Fischer Random World Champion Hikaru Nakamura who is yet to score his first win. After a round 1 loss, Nakamura stopped the bleeding by drawing all four of his games! Both the poster boys are stuck mid table.
World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju had a mixed day, also securing 2 points, giving company to Carlsen and Nakamura. The young champion displayed flashes of brilliance but couldn’t maintain consistency throughout the day.
The tournament’s format adds an extra layer of excitement and pressure. After the rapid round-robin stage, the bottom two players will be eliminated. Currently, GM Vladimir Fedoseev and GM Levon Aronian occupy the last two spots, making their upcoming games crucial for survival.
The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour has only just begun, and there’s plenty of thrilling chess to look forward to. Day 2 promises more intense battles as the players vie for a spot in the knockout stage. With the threat of elimination looming, every move will be critical.
Chess enthusiasts worldwide eagerly await the continuation of this exciting tournament. The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour is sure to deliver more surprises, brilliant moves, and nail-biting finishes in the days to come.
