FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2026 Preview
If we look back at the last 10 World Champions of Chess (Blitz), the image vividly tells the story of Magnus Carlsen’s dominance in the FIDE World Blitz Championship, where the Norwegian has claimed the title an astounding seven times, including the infamous shared title with Ian Nepomniachtchi in the previous edition, over the last 10 years. This feat solidifies his status of not just the “GOAT” but also the undisputed “Blitz King” of our generation.

In just ten days, the action moves to Doha, Qatar, for the 2026 FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships, promising a high-stakes, fast-paced battle. Carlsen, the reigning champion and a perpetual favorite, will be aiming to extend his legacy.
The field is packed with talent, including World No. 3 Fabiano Caruana and the reigning World Chess Champion, Gukesh D. Gukesh, despite a stunning rise in classical chess, will be looking to significantly improve his results in the shorter time formats, where he has openly admitted to needing work. Meanwhile, the championships will miss a key figure, as rapid and blitz specialist Hikaru Nakamura is reportedly absent following the birth of his child.
With a revamped format for Blitz, massive prize funds and valuable qualification spots for the new Total Chess World Championship Tour on the line, fans can expect a spectacular, unpredictable showdown where nerves and speed are as crucial as skill.
