Fedoseev joins Aravindh in lead @ Biel
Top seed GM Vladimir Fedoseev (14.0) joined GM Aravindh Chithambaram in lead after the third round in the classical section of the 58th Biel Chess Festival at Biel, Switzerland. The duo on top were followed by World Rapid Champion Volodar Murzin (9.5) in the third place. While Fedoseev beat Wojtaszek, Chithambaram drew Murzin and Salem inflicted a second successive defeat on German Svane.
Top seed GM Vladimir Fedoseev foiled the solid Queen’s Gambit Declined from the Polish Grandmaster Radoslaw Wojtaszek in a clinical middle game moving into joint lead. Black’s 28…f5 break appeared little suspect as very soon Wojtaszek faced an unplesant minor pieces ending. The extra pawn on the queen-side was more than handful for Fedoseev to press the advantage home.
In the Challengers section the lead remained unchanged, with GMs Nikolas Theodorou & Aram Hakobyan keeping the top two spots with 17.5 & 14.0 points respectively. Both drew their games while Rinat Jumabayev (9.5) beat Daniel Dardha (5.5) moving out of the bottom.
Similar to Norway Chess, Biel has it’s own unique points system for the Grandmaster triathlon GMT viz., (a) Classical: 4 points for a win; 1.5 point for a draw; 0 point for a loss, (b) Rapid: 2 points for a win; 1 point for a draw; 0 point for a loss (c) Blitz: 1 point for a win; 0.5 point for a draw; 0 point for a loss.
Time Control: Classical: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest of the game + 30 seconds increment as of move 41. Rapid: 15 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move & Blitz: 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment per move.
The 4th round of Biel Masters classical chess starts by Friday 18th July at 2 PM local time, 5:30 PM IST.
