Famous Legend Gata Kamsky Transfers from US to France
Posted on June 17, 2025 BY Michael Ludwig
Gata Kamsky, the former world #4, is transferring federations from the United States to France. The late-career move, at age 51, comes after spending 36 years representing the United States, having moved from Russia in 1989.
Among his best accomplishments in his time as one of the best players in the world, he lost the final of the FIDE World Chess Championship 1996 to Anatoly Karpov, 10.5 – 7.5, won five US Championships, and won the 2007 Chess World Cup as the 11th seed, topping Alexei Shirov in the finals.
Kamsky has not been a tremendously active player, so we will be watching to see if this rekindles his competitive spirit. Currently he is ranked fifth in the French rankings, in a tight group around the 2600-level.
