Divya Deshmukh Dedicates GM Title to Late Coach Rahul Joshi
After her historic triumph in Batumi, the 19-year-old and India’s 4th female Grandmaster, Divya Deshmukh, was celebrated with a grand parade at the Nagpur airport, where hundreds gathered to honour the young chess phenom and her victory at the Women’s Chess World Cup. The victory, secured by defeating Koneru Humpy in a thrilling tiebreaker, marked a defining moment in her career.
One of the most magical moments from the parade was Divya holding a photo frame of her first coach, Rahul Joshi, who tragically passed away in 2020 at the tender age of 40. Divya dedicated her Grandmaster title to him.

“He always wanted me to become a Grandmaster, and this is for him,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. Joshi, who began coaching her at age six, laid the foundation for her remarkable journey. Divya’s heartfelt tribute and recent strides continue to inspire chess players and enthusiasts across India.
