Christopher Yoo gets handed a Worldwide Ban
18-year-old Christopher Yoo, who was under a provisional 60-day suspension, has been given a full-fledged worldwide ban by the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) till November 14, 2025. The ban came on recommendation from the US Chess Federation (USCF), which had Yoo under a stringent 1-year ban for assaulting a videographer during the 2024 US Championship, w.e.f., November 15, 2024.
Despite the local ban earlier, Christopher Yoo was able to make an appearance at the Sardinia Open, where a second complaint of harassment was registered against the teenager. At the time, EDC imposed a 60-day suspension on Yoo while still investigating the matters. On July 1, 2025, FIDE issued a press release announcing the final decision – extension of the 1-year ban by the USCF to worldwide level.
In addition to the ban, Yoo will also be subject to a 5-year probation period by FIDE. “I plan on making a comeback in 4.5 months, and wiping this ban away,” reacted Christopher Yoo in the comments section on chess.com. Along with many other comments which received a mixed reaction from the fans, Yoo also added that he will behave well for the next 5 years. FIDE’s actions underscore the organisation’s commitment to upholding ethical standards in chess. With a probation period also in place, Yoo’s expressed determination to return to competitive play and adhere to better conduct will be closely scrutinised, marking a critical juncture in his young career.
