Christopher Yoo Gets a 60-Day Ban from FIDE Ethics Commission
In a decisive action, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) has issued a 60-day provisional suspension against Grandmaster Christopher Yoo, effective May 9, 2025, as detailed in a recent press release. This measure follows the lodging of a second complaint alleging harassment, currently under preliminary scrutiny. This complaint compounds an earlier grievance from the United States Chess Federation (USCF).
On November 14, 2024, the USCF imposed a stringent one-year ban on Yoo, prohibiting participation in its sanctioned events, after Yoo physically assaulted a videographer in frustration of his performance during the 2024 US Chess Championship. Despite the local ban, Christopher Yoo continued to participate in European Open tournaments, having recently won one – Sardinia Open.
Invoking Article 26.12 of the FIDE Charter, the USCF has formally requested that FIDE extend this sanction internationally, a petition grounded in Article 4.15 of the FIDE Ethics Code. This request remains under deliberation.
Citing the severity of the allegations, the EDC Chair has enacted Yoo’s temporary suspension to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation. The second complaint’s details, including the complainant’s identity, remain confidential due to their sensitive nature. Both Yoo and the USCF have been duly informed, with the possibility of an extended suspension should the inquiry exceed the initial 60-day period.
This resolute step underscores FIDE’s unwavering dedication to fostering a respectful and equitable environment within the global chess community. As the EDC navigates the complexities of these allegations, the chess world awaits further developments, with Yoo’s standing in the sport poised at a critical juncture.
