Carlsen wins Esports World Cup @ Riyadh
Still the best. Still the man to beat. That’s World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen for you. In the $1.5 million Esports World Cup at the stunning Boulevard City Riyadh, Magnus Carlsen (Team Liquid) defeated fellow speed demon Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons) 3-1 in both the sets of the grand final. Carlsen took the first set with two wins & two draws, while the second set saw Firouzja bringing down the Norwegian in the first game. But that was the only silver lining for the Iranian French Grandmaster as Carlsen hit back winning the next three games to take the second set 3-1 and the title.

Carlsen gets the trophy and the winner’s cheque of $ 250,000 while second placed Firouzja takes home $ 190,000. In the match for the third place Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons) overcame Erigaisi Arjun (Team Gen G) 3.5-2.5 receiving a cash award of $ 145,000. Erigaisi got $ 115,000 for taking the fourth spot. The four day Esports chess event ran from 29th July to 1st August, 2025.
Chess, getting introduced into Esports World Cup for the first time showcased 16 top Grandmasters turning out for various teams. On display were 25 categories of Esports carrying a total prize money of $70 million plus. In December 2024, Magnus Carlsen – the Norwegian who would go on to win the 2025 Esports World Cup chess title – was announced as the EWC’s chess ambassador.

With each game going through a time frame of 10 minutes (without any increment) there was no dearth of thrill or excitement. Time was also an unseen opponent that these speed legends had to deal with.
