World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen along with world champion Gukesh Dommaraju, Arjun Erigaisi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Vladislav Artemiev led the star field with 4.5 points after the fifth round of the Euros 1 million FIDE Rapid & Blitz Championships 2025 at Doha. Shedding a lone draw to GM Erigaisi Arjun the Norwegian looked in fine nick and is likely to be one standing between the world rapid champion title and a possible challenger.

Five times World rapid champion Magnus Carlsen, who loves speed chess and had last played a FIDE event at the New York World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2024. Fluent wins in the first four rounds against GMs Lodici Lorenzo, Paravyan David, Iturrizaga Bonelli Eduardo, Anton Guijarro David saw Carlsen move to 4/4 along with GM Erigaisi Arjun. Following them at 3.5/4 were two juniors viz., GM Sina Movahed and IM Goutham Krishna H who were conquering one mountain after the other.

15-year-old Indian International Master Goutham Krishna kept conquering one top GM after the other making big news at Doha. Among those GMs the Indian boy scalped were Indjic Aleksandar, Aravindh Chithambaram andTeimour Radjabov while drew Grand Swiss Champion Anish Giri and former world blitz champion Alexander Grischuk. Goutham next faces GM Hans Moke Niemann in what promises to be a sizzling clash. An ELO 2880 performance has made the Indian boy, hailing for the state of Kerala, the same as another speed merchant GM Nihal Sarin, the star of the day.
In key pairings of the next round MVL faces Carlsen, Erigaisi takes on Artemiev, while Giri crosses swords with Gukesh. Day two of the rapid championships starts on Saturday, 27th December by 6 AM ET / 12:00 CET / 4:30 PM IST.
