Big updates to the FIDE Calendar
FIDE has updated their tournament calendar, assigning dates and hosts to some of the marquee events of 2025. Their headline announcement is that the FIDE Grand Swiss will be held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from September 3-15, 2025. The top two finishers of the Grand Swiss will earn spots in the next Candidates tournament, for both the men’s and women’s. The other biggest highlights are:
– Women’s World Cup: Batumi, Georgia, July 5-29
– World Cup: TBD, India, October 31 – November 27
– World Rapid & Blitz Championships: Doha, Qatar, December 25-31
Top finishers in the World Cup will also qualify for the Candidates. Not yet mentioned is the 2025 Women’s World Championship, to take place between defending champion Ju Wenjun and 2024 Candidates winner Tan Zhongyi. The rest of the calendar can be viewed on the FIDE website.
