Aravindh & Pragg finish on top @ Avagyan Memorial, Armenia
Indian Grandmasters Aravindh Chithambaram & Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu powered to a 6.5/9 score finishing 1.5 points ahead of the field in the 6th Stepan Avagyan Memorial – RR tournament at Jermuk, Armenia. Better tie-break gave GM Aravindh the title, his second big one, after the Prague Masters in March. GM Kollars Dmitrij of Germany took the third spot with 5.0 points, followed by GMs Sevian Samuel (USA) & Bjerre Jonas Buhl (Denmark) at 4.5 points. The category 17 Super Grandmaster tournament ran from 29th May to 6th June, 2025.

GM Aravindh’s 8.7 FIDE rating points gain along with tournament rating performance of ELO 2824 takes the Chennai lad to World No. 9 in LIVE rankings at 2757.8 ahead of Ian Nepomniachtchi. With Aravindh’s elevation here, India now has four players in the top ten viz., Gukesh, Erigaisi, Praggnanandhaa and Aravindh, quite a tall order.
Equally impressive was fellow Indian GM Praggnanandhaa who came up the ELO 2823 tournament rating performance. Pragg now moves to World No. 6 with career best rating of 2774.2 in LIVE rankings. Both these gems come from the same stable Chess Gurukul, that of Grandmaster R B Ramesh, who has been nurturing, mentoring and training the duo for several years now.
This time around it turned out to be a big success for India, with both their GMs finishing jointly on top. With four wins and five draws each Aravindh and Pragg outclassed the field, improving their ELOs and their world rankings. In fact, the Indian duo have so far shared 4 big titles this year viz., Aravindh winning the Prague Masters & Avagyan Memorial, Jermuk while Praggnanandhaa coasted to Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee & GCT Superbet Romania titles. At half way mark, the FIDE Circuit for the Candidates see Pragg, Aravindh, Ding & Giri leading the pack. With close to seven months and several tournaments to go, it could still throw in surprises.
GMs Kollars Dmitrij (5.0) and Sevian Samuel (4.5) remained undefeated, while top Dane Bjerre Jonas Buhl (4.5) showed promise losing just a single game to the eventual winner.
