Aerflot Open Concludes: Hans Niemann Challenges the Winner to a Match
The 2025 Aeroflot Open concluded with a thrilling finish, ultimately seeing Ian Nepomniachtchi emerge as the victor. This prestigious tournament, held in Moscow, witnessed a strong field of chess players, making for an intense and high-quality battle on the 64 squares.
In a rare occurrence, super Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi joined the Open and started as the first seed. His performance was marked by a combination of solid play and strategic brilliance. He navigated the rounds with notable consistency, maintaining a strong position throughout the competition. Nepo scored an undefeated 7/9, drawing four and winning 5 of his games.
HANS VS NEPO
Apart from his stable and resourceful play throughout the event, Nepomniachtchi’s quick draw with repetition against Hans Niemann was one of the highlights. The two clashed in Round 8, where Nepo had the white pieces. Instead of fighting for the full point, the players called it a day after 13 moves of play.

Adding spice to the matter, Hans has also challenged Ian Nepomniachtchi to a blitz match for $100k with nothing to lose for Nepo. Hans’ bold open challenges to fellow top players in an attempt to earn his clean sheet from the cheating slate are one of a kind.

After the lack of invitations, Hans Niemann managed to keep his rating at the Aeroflot Open, having finished joint #2 (overall #8). This wasn’t the end of chess for Hans in Moscow this week, as he prepares to face Daniil Dubov in a blitz match the next day. It remains to be seen if Nepomniachtchi makes Hans stay in Moscow for a couple more days by accepting his challenge.
TO SUM UP
The 2025 Aeroflot Open showcased the depth of talent in the chess world, and Nepomniachtchi’s victory reaffirms his status as one of the world’s elite players. The tournament provided fans with many exciting games. Generally, when super GMs enter Opens, they’re not always expected to win because of the unusually faster pace and variety of opponents compared to an invitational. However, Ian Nepomniachtchi let his pure chess strength speak for itself.
