Carlsen, Fabi, Keymer for the 1st FIDE Freestyle world championship
World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen will lead the pack of eight international Grandmasters who will compete in Weissenhaus, Germany for the inaugural title of FIDE Freestyle Chess World Champion. Last year the Norwegian was crowned as the winner of the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour at Cape Town, South Africa. The three day event to be held at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort on the Baltic Sea coast runs from 13th to 15th February, 2026. The total prize pool for the tournament is $300,000, with $100,000 awarded to the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Champion.
Freestyle Chess known also as Fischer Random chess or Chess960 is a chess variant where the starting position of the pieces in the first rank are picked randomly eliminating all possible preparation by chess engines and super computers. Freestyle Chess was co-founded by multiple World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Hamburg-based German entrepreneur/investor Jan-Henric Buettner in 2024. An agreement between FIDE (International Chess Federation) and Freestyle Chess early this year saw the birth of a new chess variant, where another world champion will be crowned.

Carlsen has twenty world titles under his belt viz., five classical world titles, reigning six-time World Rapid Chess Champion and the reigning nine-time World Blitz Chess Champion. The Norwegian has remined World No. 1 for 15 years from 2011 onwards and has never been unseated from that position so far.
Hosts Germany will be represented by 2025 Weissenhaus Freestyle winner Vincent Keymer. Offering the German and Magnus a stiff challenge will be six other GMs viz., Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian, Hans Moke Niemann (all USA), Erigaisi Arjun (India), Javokhir Sindarov, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (both Uzbekistan).
Day 1 on Friday features a rapid round-robin of all the 8 players who face each other once at 10 minutes + 5 seconds increment with the top four advancing into the semi-finals. Day 2 on Saturday is a knock-out where the semi-finals with 25 minutes + 10 seconds increment will be played over four games along with placement matches. Day 3 on Sunday will see the placement matches and the much awaited four game Freestyle finals also under 25 + 10 when the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Champion will be crowned.
In a parallel, two of the worlds leading female chess players will contest a Freestyle Chess exhibition match. Also, a dedicated Womens World Championship is planned for later this year. Games will begin daily at 3:00 pm local time.
